Worst Dog Breeds to Own

Considering their health and behavior, these dogs might not be the best fit for you

Best Mastiff Breed

The Mastiff breed, according to Hulbert, tends to produce an abundance of drool, and her proclamation of "Too much drool!" is likely accurate. The American Kennel Club (AKC) rates Mastiffs with a 4 out of 5 for drooling tendencies, indicating that they often require a towel nearby.

Furthermore, it's important to highlight the Mastiff's sheer size, as acknowledged by the AKC. They caution that acquiring a Mastiff, given their massive stature, is a significant commitment that should not be taken lightly.

Mini Husky Breed

Hulbert doesn't hold back when it comes to describing Siberian Huskies either. She asserts that these stunning dogs have a knack for devouring your walls and emitting loud screams.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) Mini Husky Breed, while not echoing this uniquely specific warning, does provide the Siberian Husky with the highest rating of 5 in three essential categories: playfulness (described as "non-stop"), energy level (characterized as "high energy"), and barking level (noted as "very vocal").

Shar Pei

The Shar Pei is famous for its endearingly wrinkled skin, but these wrinkles bring their own set of challenges. Hulbert includes them on her list, humorously dubbing them the "skin infection" dogs.

According to Mar Vista Animal Medical Center, the snug spaces within the Shar Pei's wrinkles can create ideal conditions for the growth of Staphylococci and other bacteria, leading to skin fold infections. In this condition, which typically affects the folds around the muzzle, the skin becomes red, moist, and emits an unpleasant odor.

German Shepherd

German Shepherd

As intimidating as German Shepherds can look, Hulbert calls these dogs "the BIGGEST scaredy-cats!"

By contrast, the AKC says that "courageous" German Shepherds have a "willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones." It sounds like Hulbert has had a different experience with this breed as a vet tech.
